JAMIE BOECKEL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
 
       
 
The Jamie Boeckel Memorial Fund Scholarship provides financial assistance to individuals in order to help them offset the costs of college, university or continuing education. The Scholarship seeks to target those students involved in sailing that have presented the ability to excel in a higher education environment.

Selected individuals will receive annual awards of $2,000 USD paid directly to the institution named by the scholarship designee for a total of up to $8,000 USD over the course of four consecutive years.

The scholarship is eligible to anyone who has exhibited an aptitude and passion for sailing. Candidates for the scholarship shall be of unique character and generous spirit. Candidate applications shall include a completed application form, a personal statement by the applicant describing why they should be awarded the scholarship and describing their passion for sailing. Applicants should also include two (2) personal references, as well as official transcripts of schools attended, a list of schools they will be applying to for admission (or attending if accepted, and a copy of their financial aid package submitted to demonstrate need).

Applicants should complete all portions of the application and forward the completed packages to the Jamie Boeckel Memorial Fund, Attention: Scholarship Applicant, 880 Third Avenue – 16th Floor, New York, N.Y. 10022 no later then July 15, 2010

 

 

  The 2007 recipient of the Jamie Boeckel Memorial Scholarship is Lauren Gineo (left) of Newport, RI. Lauren is a graduate of Rogers High School and currently a sophomore at The University of Rhode Island majoring in biology. Lauren is also in an accelerated learning program working toward her doctorate in physical therapy and sports medicine. Throughout high school and her freshman year at URI, has been the winner of numerous academic awards. She has had held summer jobs as a US Coast Guard launch driver and sailing instructor and has always been a dedicated community volunteer. In her free time, Lauren enjoys several hobbies including windsurfing, sailing, skiing, painting and photography.  

 

Leigh Hammel was awarded the 2006 Jamie Boeckel Memorial Scholarship Fund. Hammel, 18, of Warren, VT (left), has received a $2,000 a year, four-year scholarship toward her education at Stanford University, where she is majoring in civil enginerring. An accomplished sailor and dedicated scholar, Hammel attended the Green Mountain Valley School in Waitsfield, VT, which is geared toward aspiring ski-racers. Although she ski-raced competitively in her youth, Hammel eventually elected to focus her extra-curricular activites on sailing and went on to win both the US SAILING Junior Womens' Doublehanded Championship and US Youth Sailing Championship in 2005.

The Jame Boeckel Scholarship, awarded annually, targets those students involved in competitive sailing who have presented the ability to excel in a higher education environment and who have not had the support or resources necessary to prepare them for the challenges of college.
